H.S. Grad Blackjack and Social Media Marketing

we were all A LOT younger than this…

Don’t overthink the social media marketing for your tabletop games…

Its no secret that social media marketing is kiiiiiind of a pain in the a$$.

At least, thats what I think.

I’m more than happy to write any of the copy for a social media post…

  • But managing campaigns?

  • Strategizing content?

  • Monitoring the community?

Noooooooo thank you. I’ve got someone to help me with that…

And my collegue said something about social media marketing for board game companies that reminded me of a story from my high school graduation party.

Way back in 2009…

So I don’t know how it worked/works at YOUR high school, but at mine our grad party was always on campus. You’d leave the football field, grab some clothes from your car, head through the gym, and join the fun.

For years, in order to reduce the amount of drinking and driving that night, they had the seniors go straight from the graduation ceremony to the grad party. If I’m remembering it correctly, once you were in, you stayed in until it ended at 5am.

Because we were trapped, they had to give us a lot to do:

There was some sort of coffee lounge, arcade games, and some sort of craft corner. And if you got tired of those they had hired a magician, juggler, hypnotist, and probably two or three other performers I am forgetting.

But one other area they had was a “casino”… poker and black jack tables run by various dads, all dressed to the nines. And due to my loving mothers over-zealous concern for her ADHD kid getting addicted, I never gambled before in my life.

Well I wandered my way in there at some point, pulled up to a Blackjack table with some friends, and had the “dealer” (probably some dad named Jeff) explain to us the rules. It seemed simple enough, and I started playing.

I lost over, and over, and over again.

Now it obviously wasn’t real money, so its not like it cost me anything. But honestly I think that experience was more of a gambling addiction deterrant than anything my mom ever did; I have not played a hand since!

And yet, there was something that happened that I will never forget…

About an hour in, the dealer leaned in real close to all of us and whispered: “Ok… I’m going to count down to three… and when I do… I want you all to let up a cheer and roar of laughter as though you are having the best time of your lives… like something really exciting just happened… got it?”

We all nodded our heads, counted down, and let up a cheer.

The entire room turned and looked at us.

For a moment, everyone in that room believed we were having all the fun in the world. And because of that, we were the table that everyone wished they were at.

Now… you shouldn’t trick or deceive people… but one of the many goals you can pursue in social media is just as simple as this:

Use social media to show everyone how much fun your community is having.

You don’t need to:

  • Post daily…

  • The most brilliant content…

  • That makes people think, laugh, and cry…

  • Become brand ambassadors for life…

  • And share the post with everyone they have ever met…

That is setting the bar WAY too high (which will prevent you from ever doing it)

Instead, just post fun stuff you and your community are doing.

Show that y’all are good people having a good time…

And eventually your target audience will take notice and take interest, bringing new customers into your orbit.
